People Series - Bernardo

Bernardo is our newly appointed CFO and the go-to guy for many things in the company because he has worked at YouGreen for 5 years.

On his notepage, you can see all kinds of information, the newest financials, a member's request, a name of a client and etc. But, on the edges of those pages, you sometimes also find small sketches of different things, a cup, a ball, sometimes a portrait, drawn by a 2B pencil or a blue ballpoint pen.

I told him I liked his drawings. He told me drawing was his passion but he was a full-time designer only for 6 years. He said with a proud smile that it was because he had a bigger mission, which was YouGreen.

I observed Bernardo. Seemed to me he drew whenever he felt a bit lost or when he needed a break. He would draw 2 simple sketches quickly, abruptly put down his pen, then move his eyes back to those excel sheets.

When I think of Bernardo, he is always in the same jacket. A grey jacket, one of those you can see in the 90s' movie and one of those that people wear to ride motorcycle. He will never be the most talkative guy you have ever met. The times that I saw him talked the most was when he was telling me about his one-year-old son and his wife. He did start to talk to me a little more recently.

Last Friday, we were talking about how we spent our time after work. He told me for the past year, after he sent his son to bed, which would be around 930 pm, he would go on Udemy and did online courses for at least an hour. Then, he would take a quick shower and try to read for half an hour before he fell asleep.

He showed me his Udemy account, 4 different financial courses. One has been completed and all other three are more than half way already.

Monday morning, I saw sitting in the team meeting and Bernardo reported that he has just finished making the budget for the rest of 2019. I thought, humm, no wonder I saw more sketches.

But it could just be just my wrong assumption. I never asked him, because I don't want him to stop drawing.
